Sustainable development

THE ENERGY PERFORMANCE:

  • The energy consumption of the common areas has decreased by -35% between 2018 and 2023, mainly thanks to the transition to LED lighting and the replacement of less energy-intensive technical equipment.
  • Woluwe Shopping benefits from natural skylights.
  • A campaign promoting energy efficiency was conducted among the tenants and the manager.
  • An energy audit was carried out in 2023, including new recommendations to be implemented.
  • LED relamping has been carried out, and the entire shopping center is now 100% LED-equipped.
  • Implementation of a centralized energy equipment management system (Class A GTC) is planned for 2024.
  • Installation of 1296 photovoltaic panels in 2019 and 480 in 2021. These 1776 photovoltaic panels produce a total of 133,000 kWh/year, equivalent to the consumption of 170 households in Brussels, resulting in a saving of 110 tons of CO2.

Goals :

Aiming for a decrease in energy consumption of -3% per year.

WATER:

  • A decrease of -14% in water consumption between 2019 and 2023 has been achieved.
  •  Regular monitoring of the building’s water consumption is in place.
  • Installation of water-efficient equipment for water consumption has been implemented.
  • Installation of water sub-meters for each shop has been carried out.
  • A leak detection system is in place.

Goals:

  • Water-efficient equipment should be installed to improve performance.
  • Assess the possibility of reducing the flow rate of infrared faucets.
  • Implement a leak detection system.
  • Aim to at least not exceed the consumption level of the previous year.

WASTE RECYCLING:

  • Sorting of cardboard, plastics, residuals, glass, pallets, and organic waste by Bruxelles Propreté for all waste from the shops.
  • Awareness campaigns are conducted for our visitors and shops.
  • Elimination of single-use products (e.g., plastic cups), particularly through the installation of public water fountains.
  • Installation of the Recycle Point (located at the level of the toilets of the purple entrance): you can deposit your batteries, small used electrical appliances, neon lights, or even clothing donations (in partnership with Recupel and Les Petits Riens).

Goals :

  • Monitoring of waste production within the building (visitors / shops).
  • Collaboration with shops to limit the amount of waste generated.

BIODIVERRSITY:

  • Ecological audit conducted in 2024.
  • Woluwe Shopping is vegetated to the extent of 4%.
  • The green spaces located in the center represent a great potential for hosting local fauna and flora. Everything is done to maximize their ecological interest.
  • Installation of two beehives on our roofs with the company Alvéole.
  • Damaged areas have been replanted.
  • Awareness of biodiversity.
  • Zero phytosanitary products used for green space management.

Goals :

  • Increase vegetated areas while adhering to the recommendations of the ecological audit conducted in 2024.
  • Install birdhouses and insect hotels.

CARBON FOOTPRINT :

  • Initiation of a carbon study in 2023 to determine the action plan for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 (Paris Agreement).

CERTIFICATION BREEAM IN-USE :

  • The BREEAM In-Use certification is a certificate that rewards the environmental commitment of the center. Woluwe Shopping aims to highlight the quality of the building and the good management of the site on various sustainable development themes.
  • The obtained rating is :
    Asset = Very Good
    Management = Very Good
  • By deciding to engage in an environmental certification process, Woluwe Shopping has therefore developed an environmental policy.

CLIMATE CHANGE RISK MANAGEMENT:

  • A climate change risk audit was conducted in 2023 to identify the risks that the shopping center may be exposed to due to climatic hazards and changes, such as the risks of flooding, drought, heatwaves, wildfires, strong winds, and tornadoes.
